I had my 3rd gen iPod for years until it got stolen but it gave me over 3 years of love before all these 'posh' colour ones came out.
It was and still is the best mp3 player and they joy it brought me! If the iPod classic does go it'll be a sad day but that's evolution for you, the new ones are just as exciting!
That blog just goes to show that Job's was right and still is, with every new Apple product negative responses galore appear and yet we all end up buying one in the end!

Event sells out when there are fewer seats. it could just be another strategy to create news. When you have too many empty seats, it does not look good for the the press nor the attendees.
A company would rather have a news that says "sold out" than too many left overs.

Does anyone have the list of the slogans for the last few years and how they related to any product releases?? I believe this is a deliberate red herring by Apple. Pigs might be in the air - flying?
Either that or its something small(ish) like new Airport Express iTunes streaming thing. Maybe trying to make 2008 the year that everyone does away with CDs and downloads all their music and streams it around the house.
What about an Apple Radio of some sort? Able to play DAB radio and stream your iTunes.

Especially when iPods first hit the scene, price was a big issue for a lot of customers. Apple products have always been on the pricey side. So perhaps the popularity of the larger capacity iPods was impacted by the pricing structure, which impacted Apple's perception of the demand.
Apple's non Mac consumer electronics are not boutique/luxury goods and haven't been for a long time. They're cheaper than competitor hardware with similar specs. Even Samsung CE, a member of Samsung Group which makes the most expensive components that go into Apple's consumer electronics, can't compete with Apple on price due to Apple's volume and pre-emptive supply chain lockup.
It's getting kindof absurd seeing that hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper. Would an iPod Touch really be that much thicker if it had 128 GB? And just how thick would (dare I say it) a 500 GB iPod Touch be? For the way I would use the device, I wouldn't mind a little extra thickness and weight.

I love the "Apple tax is out of control" straw man argument.
Very recently I was given a new MS Windows laptop at work. It is a HP EliteBook 8440p laptop. Keep in mind that I knew nothing about the laptop before it was given to me. I am looking at it and thinking, great I was given another low budget laptop to use at work. From the appearance, it looks like a $500 laptop that was built in the 1990's. After doing some digging, this thing is $1300 the way it is configured (starts at $900; Yes, I know this is the MSRP). Talk about a tax that is out of control.
It has basically a unusable trackpad, too small and because the laptop is so thick uncomfortable after several minutes of use. I ended up hooking up a mouse.
I love all the extra lights on it, one for the hard drive status, two for power status, two for WiFi status, one for the trackpad status, three for the volume. I also love the inovative way that HP decided to lightup the keyboard, a popout light on the screen frame. Maybe the lack of a lighted keyboard would have drained the 4 hours battery too quickly that is included in this $1300 laptop.
When I first opened the lid on the laptop I got a good laugh seeing a "intel CORE i5 vPro" sticker that was placed crooked next to trackpad. What is it with all the lights and stickers on these Windows laptops. Someone can't tell if there laptop is on or if the hard drive is accessible.

WOW!!!! 8 megapixe?!!!!!!! i remember like 5 years ago when i bought a 200$ camera and it was 6 megapixels and it was considered amazing and here is the iphone with a 8!!! ITS CRAZZZYYY:confused:
for the basic consumer, ie the market for the iphone, a 6 MP camera is more than enough. Heck 4MP is probably more than enough.
Only professionals and serious prosumers need those crazy 18MP, 60fps rigs like a Canon 7D.
Now if you can tell me that that 8MP sensor also supports low light settings to help Joe Public get better shots of Joe Jr and Jane Jr, then okay I might buy it. But just based on the MP, I am not buying it. I still say it is possible that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Be it, they aren't making anything for Apple or they are making a lower grade sensor and he merely assumed it was their highest
I am just tired of seeing people on here hoping for a mediocre upgrade... such as no design change and little speed bump...not referring to this thread in particular, but i see it in others..
I'm on a lot of boards and I've seen no one 'hoping' for a mediocre upgrade.
But I have seen a lot of folks smart enough to realize that the tech has plateau'd until there are useable LTE support and NFC support and thus it is likely that it will be a small upgrade this go around, just like from the 3g to the 3gs.
That's not 'hoping' that's just being realistic.
To me, this just feels like a slap in the face to ipad2 owners :(

It's always easier to go bigger than smaller so if you can get something to work in the iphone/touch, it's child's play to go up to the ipad. Nope. the main uses for Flash are games, ads and video playback. A few sites like movie and band sites will be full flash. But even before iOS came out many sites were dumping Flash due to accessibility concerns. When iOS came out, even more sites phased out Flash or created second 'mobile' sites that were Flash Free. when the Apps SDK came out, some of that group added apps as well or in place of the second site version.
Even the porn industry, long viewed as a touch stone for internet tech acceptance has openly been dropping Flash for HTML5 to increase their possible viewing.

The thing is, it still is suboptimal on the current generation. I believe Apple just added it as just another feature while music is the main priority of the player.

First of all, thanks to milo for finding a transcript of that forum where Steve Jobs related his thoughts about a video iPod. My own recollection, it appears, was a bit cloudy. :p
That being said, what QuarterSwede said. Jobs never said, "Never" to the video iPod. He talked instead about limitations, how video on a portable device would never replicate watching video on a 50 inch screen. Video on an iPod would be "suboptimal" but again, he never said it would be something Apple would never do.
Instead, he was really trying to lower people's expectations about video on the iPod. We know now that Apple already had a video iPod in the labs, with the same 4:3 screen ratio and 320x240 resolution. People back then (as today) were talking about widescreen iPods that somehow would be like portable DVD players, with monstrous screens and such. So it seems that Steve knew that a video iPod would still be a while off in terms of a commercial launch, but needed to lower people's expectations. His talk was simply about the pros-and-cons of doing video on an iPod, not a statement that a video ipod was totally out of the possibility.
Notice again his comments about wireless. Steve again couches his comments with talk of pros-and-cons. He is realistic about what wireless will do, but it's also clear he isn't ready to release a wireless iPod just for the sake of wireless. Toys R Us...Apple is SERIOUS about positioning the iPad for gaming and entertainment...maybe even education. I can see an iPad waterproof enclosure in the near future.

Anybody got a alternative method for reaching CorvusCamenarum, such as email, text, etc.? I don't want it, and I'm not asking that it get posted, but if someone has a method for checking if he's ok, I hope you will. Yeah he can really make analogies which really sticks - as well as leading us the faithful few towards the holy land of home electronics - integration with your integrity intact (one of the things with the design of the macintosh was that steve wanted the computer to look more like a human - some of the more esoteric ideas such as computer ears on the sides might have been scrapped, but I believe the user/computer interface is more like communication between two humans rather than a human and an inanimate computer)

I think this put the nail in the coffin on the headless desktop between the iMac and the Mac Pro.
The only things that bugs me (probably because I bought a Mac Pro) is that the iMacs come standard with 1GB and a comparable card. Makes me wish they went at least 2GB and a 7600GT. But oh well.
Considering they added a 24" iMac, what are the chances that they will move the 23" ACD to 24"?

We completed the game on regular and are about 3/4 finished with the game on Heroic. All in all, it is worth playing. High points are jet packs, space combat, flying combat. Graphics/movies are awesome. I realize this is the prequel to the Halo trilogy, and as such it is worthy, but some aspects feel repetitive. I think it comes with the territory (5th game or so of a shooter series). I wish there had been more tank based combat, where it is your tank, and not hijacking one.
Normally I like playing on "regular" and just cruising through the game enjoying the sights and encounters so I don't have a good comparison with previous Halo games, but I read that the A.I. is improved and I've noticed on Heroic, generally speaking it's not real safe hiding in a corner waiting for your health to regenerate. The baddies tend to come for you. :)

BTW, I'm playing with with my nephew. Regarding accumulated credits, he is an aggressive player who gets shot to pieces but in the end makes more kills than I do, along with lots of extra deaths. I would assume that since he has earned twice as much credit as I have, that the game only cares about kills and not kills per death? I'm more conservative focused on staying alive, so this is a little annoying. :p

something tells me you are not going to be able to back up 64gb (potentially 128gb) of data to the cloud free of charge.initial backup over wifi (required) then future incremental (smaller) backups could be over 3G. the iPhone already tells you when an app is to large to update w/o wifi - it's already been training us about what we can and can't do w/o wifi.

Earlier this week I saw a rumor about Apple and Garmin joining forces at this years MacWorld. I hope it's true as I bought some Garmin stock earlier this week and already hold 899 shares of Apple. Garmin desperately needs a new revenue source, especially in the new economic recession/stagflation, and Apple could use the best GPS consumer electronics maker in the industry to position themselves further ahead of the competition. Also, if it's an exclusive agreement, this could put them much further along than even Nokia who licenses the mapping software to Garmin for all their GPS.
Maybe a way for Apple to corner the market while telling their competitors to grab their ankles..

It probably has to do with the three20 project incident a couple of days ago. Basically some devs had their apps rejected because they were using three20 which had some private API calls.
That's pretty understandable then. Having not only your work but other devs work rejected because they used your library - that's your reputation at stake
